Kroger and Indianapolis Public School 46 formed a partnership in 1985 that has continued to this day and is one of the longest in the city school system’s history. In addition to providing corporate financial support, there are Kroger associates who volunteer on a monthly basis in classrooms as mentors. While working for the retail grocery chain, I had the opportunity to lead this partnership and coordinate both financial and volunteer support.
The Indianapolis Star published articles in 2010 about the city’s public school system through the column, “Our Children Our City”. The newspaper focused on bringing awareness to education challenges and set a goal to increase the number of school volunteers. Kroger’s Public Affairs department was able to take advantage of the focus and pitch the story of the corporate partnership with IPS 46. Over several months I had the opportunity to coordinate interviews and photography sessions for this story. The result was a front page placement that brought attention to Kroger’s commitment to education.
